The return of one of Fort Myers Beach's most recognizable landmarks is another step closer to becoming reality.
Lee County officials have announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved the federal permit needed to rebuild the Fort Myers Beach Pier. According to Lee County Commissioner David Mulicka, pending congressional funding, construction could begin as early as August and is expected to take approximately one year to complete.
The Fort Myers Beach Pier has welcomed residents and visitors for generations. A wooden pier originally stood at the site in the 1930s before being replaced by the familiar concrete structure that became an iconic gathering place on the island. For decades, it served as a popular destination for fishing, sightseeing, sunsets, and community events.
That chapter came to an abrupt end on September 28, 2022, when Hurricane Ian devastated Fort Myers Beach. The powerful storm destroyed the pier along with much of the surrounding Times Square area, leaving behind one of the storm's most recognizable reminders.
Since then, rebuilding the pier has remained a priority for many in the community. The newly approved federal permit marks a significant milestone in moving the project forward.
If funding is secured by Congress, construction could begin as early as August. County officials estimate the project will take approximately one year to complete.
The Fort Myers Beach Pier has long been more than just a fishing pier—it has been a symbol of the island and a place where countless memories have been made. Its reconstruction represents another step in the ongoing recovery of Fort Myers Beach following Hurricane Ian.
As work continues toward rebuilding, many residents and visitors are hopeful to once again see people fishing, strolling, and watching sunsets from one of Southwest Florida's most iconic waterfront landmarks.
